Playa Juanillo, Cap Cana
Overview
Playa Juanillo is a crescent of fine white sand of about a kilometre inside Cap Cana, the gated development at the southern end of the Punta Cana coast. It is backed by coconut palms, and the water is shallow and calm, sheltered by the reef offshore, with a sandy bottom that extends a long way out. Resorts including Sanctuary Cap Cana stand nearby, and the Cap Cana marina is close.
Beaches in the Dominican Republic are public by law, but Juanillo lies within the Cap Cana gate, so visitors who are not staying in Cap Cana register at the entrance and leave photo identification. On the sand, the beach club runs on a food and drink voucher or minimum spend, and its loungers and shaded areas are reserved for its customers. The terms have changed over the years and are best confirmed before visiting.

Position relative to the Atlantic sargassum belt
The east coast of the Dominican Republic faces the Atlantic sargassum belt directly. The reef in front of Juanillo calms the water but does not stop floating sargassum, and visitors' reports describe heavy accumulations in some summer months as well as days when the beach is entirely clear. The beach is cleaned in the morning, so conditions can differ between early and late in the day.
The sargassum season
On the Dominican coast the heaviest arrivals usually fall between spring and late summer, and the winter months are generally quieter. Volumes and timing vary considerably from one year to the next, so recent photographs are a better guide than the calendar.
Swimming conditions and safety
The water is usually calm and shallow for a long way from the shore, which makes Juanillo one of the easiest beaches on this coast for children and inexperienced swimmers. Some reviewers mention concrete sections along parts of the beach, so footwear is useful.

The hotels and villas of Cap Cana are the closest places to stay. Visitors staying in Bávaro or Uvero Alto usually come to Juanillo for the day.
Access and getting there
Juanillo is reached through the main gate of Cap Cana, south of Punta Cana International Airport. App-based ride services are not allowed inside Cap Cana, and there is no public transport within the development, so visitors arrive by registered taxi or rental car and register all passengers at the gate.
