El Cortecito
Overview
El Cortecito is a former fishing village in the middle of the Bávaro resort strip, on the east coast of the Dominican Republic in La Altagracia province, between Playa Bávaro to the south and Arena Gorda to the north. Where the beaches either side of it are continuous hotel frontage, this short public stretch has fishing boats pulled up on the sand, seafood restaurants, beach bars and a craft and souvenir market. That makes it one of the few places on this coast where a visitor who is not a hotel guest can reach the sea easily, eat and spend the day. It is correspondingly busier, with vendors working the beach, and the public section itself is small.

The sand is the same pale Bávaro beach that runs north to Arena Gorda and south toward Cabeza de Toro, with shallow turquoise water and a reef offshore that is popular with snorkelling and diving trips. El Cortecito is also a departure point for catamaran cruises, fishing trips and other boat excursions. Captain Cook, one of the best-known seafood restaurants in Punta Cana, stands on the beach here.

Position relative to the Atlantic sargassum belt
Sargassum forms in the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt across the tropical Atlantic, and the east coast of Hispaniola is among the first large coastlines in its path as it moves west.
El Cortecito faces east into that flow, so sargassum can reach it directly when the wind and current bring it in. In September and October 2026 our photographs often showed the Bávaro beaches, El Cortecito included, mostly clear, with Arena Gorda to the north the clearest stretch of the coast.
The resorts either side clear their own frontage, so conditions can look different a few hundred metres apart on the same morning.
The sargassum season
On this coast the season runs from roughly March or April into August or September, longer and earlier than the Mexican Caribbean because the island sits so close to the belt, with the quieter months from late autumn through winter.

Swimming conditions and safety
The water is usually calm enough for an easy swim, with a sandy bottom. Conditions can be rougher when the easterly wind is up, and because boats work directly off the sand here, swimmers should stay clear of the boat lanes.
On sargassum: fresh weed in the water is harmless, if unpleasant to swim through. The sulphurous smell some visitors associate with it comes from material that has decomposed on hot sand for a day or more and is releasing hydrogen sulphide, so a strong smell indicates old weed rather than a fresh arrival.
Choosing a hotel on this stretch
El Cortecito itself has smaller hotels and apartments, such as Hotel Cortecito Inn, alongside the larger resorts that begin immediately either side, among them Grand Palladium, Occidental Punta Cana and TRS Turquesa. It is one of the few places in Bávaro where an independent traveller can stay walkably close to restaurants and the sea without booking an all-inclusive.
The large complexes begin immediately either side. The practical question to put to any of them during the season is whether they clear their frontage every morning and how wide their section of sand is, because on a coast that receives weed directly, that is what separates one stay from another.
Access and getting there
Punta Cana International Airport serves the whole coast. Most visitors arrive on a hotel transfer or by taxi; unlike most of this coast, El Cortecito is also reachable independently, which is much of its appeal.
Guaguas, the shared minibuses, run along the main Bávaro roads and connect to Higüey, from where longer-distance coaches serve Santo Domingo. Within Bávaro, motoconchos and taxis cover the short distances between the resort areas.
We do not publish a car park for El Cortecito, because there is no verified public lot. Parking is informal street and private ground behind the beach, and those arrangements change, so they are best settled on the spot rather than taken from any page.
