Clearwater Beach
Overview
Clearwater Beach occupies a barrier island on the Gulf of Mexico in Pinellas County, west of Tampa, connected to the mainland by causeway. It is a broad, gently shelving strand of fine pale sand, backed by the Beach Walk promenade and a line of hotels rather than by natural dune, and it is among the most visited beaches in the state.
Pier 60 sits at the centre of it and functions as the beach's reference point: the main parking, the nightly sunset market and the busiest section of sand are all there. Walking north or south from the pier thins the crowds considerably within a few hundred metres.
The water is Gulf water, which means warm, calm and pale green rather than Caribbean blue, over a sandy bottom with very little reef or rock. It is a swimming and wading beach rather than a snorkelling one.

Clearwater Beach is covered by two live webcams, at Frenchy's Rockaway Grill and at The Edge Hotel, and both are linked from the live map. Because they are YouTube streams they cannot be captured as still frames, so this section fills from visitor submissions rather than automatically. Until it does, the cameras show the beach as it is at this moment, which for a Gulf beach is usually the more useful check.
Readings here sit at the top of our range, and that reflects a structural fact about Gulf-coast geography rather than a favourable month, as set out below.
Photographs matter differently on this coast than on the Atlantic side. Where an Atlantic image is usually a warning, a dated Gulf image works as confirmation: evidence that the water and sand were genuinely clear on a given morning. Position relative to the Atlantic sargassum belt
The sargassum that affects Florida crosses the tropical Atlantic, passes through the Caribbean and turns north through the Florida Straits in the Florida Current, which becomes the Gulf Stream along the state's Atlantic coast. Very little of that volume enters the eastern Gulf of Mexico, which places this coast outside the system that dominates the Keys and the south-east.
Clearwater sits roughly 400 kilometres from the Atlantic beaches by road and on the opposite side of the peninsula in oceanographic terms. What Gulf circulation, the Loop Current, does carry into this basin generally stays well offshore and disperses, so quantities reaching Pinellas County beaches are trivial by comparison with Miami-Dade or the Keys.
Two local features reinforce it. The beach is a west-facing barrier island, so its prevailing exposure is to Gulf wind and swell rather than to a warm current arriving from the tropics. And the wide, gently sloping profile means the small amounts of weed and other wrack that do come ashore are spread thin along a broad beach and cleared by daily grooming rather than piling into a band.
Anyone comparing Florida coasts should treat them as two separate systems. The same week can be poor at Fort Lauderdale and unaffected here, which is exactly what our scores show over time.
The sargassum season
The Florida sargassum season runs from roughly May into August, and it is an Atlantic-coast phenomenon in all but unusual years. On this shore the seasonal variable that actually affects a visit is red tide, a bloom of the algae Karenia brevis that occurs naturally in the Gulf, most often in late summer and autumn. It is unrelated to sargassum, it does not look like weed on the sand, and it is the thing to check locally before travelling in those months.

Swimming conditions and safety
This is an easy swim by Florida standards: gentle surf, a sandy bottom and a gradual shelf. Lifeguards cover the central sections in season and the flag system is used consistently, which is worth watching on windy days when rip currents can form around the pier and the passes.
The two hazards specific to this coast are boat traffic through the nearby pass and, in bloom years, the respiratory irritation that accompanies red tide. The latter is noticeable rather than subtle; if it is present, the wind carries it onto the beach and the sensible response is to move inland or up the coast.
On sargassum, for completeness: fresh weed in the water is harmless, and the sulphurous smell associated with it comes from material decomposing on hot sand over a day or more. Neither is a common experience on this beach.
Choosing a hotel on this stretch
The choice on Clearwater Beach is mainly between the towers around Pier 60, which put the promenade, restaurants and the main beach within a few minutes on foot, and the quieter properties north toward Sand Key and along the northern residential end.
Because the beach is uniform and publicly accessible along its length, the difference between properties is convenience rather than conditions. Parking is the practical consideration: staying within walking distance of the pier avoids the busiest lot on the coast, and hotel parking here is usually charged separately.
Visitors weighing this coast against the Atlantic side for a summer visit should note that our Gulf scores are consistently higher through the sargassum season. The trade-off is Gulf water rather than Atlantic surf, and the possibility of a red-tide bloom in late summer.

Pier 60 Park is the heart of Clearwater Beach, with a large paid municipal lot and garage beside the pier and Beach Walk. Payment is at the machines or by app. It is the busiest lot on the coast and fills early; the nearby Clearwater Beach garages provide overflow.

The Jolley Trolley runs along the beach and up the barrier islands, and PSTA buses connect to Clearwater and Tampa. On a busy weekend the trolley from a mainland lot is considerably less trouble than driving onto the island.
