Anna Maria Island

Overview

Anna Maria Island is a barrier island at the mouth of Tampa Bay in Manatee County, and it is deliberately unlike most of the Florida Gulf coast. Building heights are capped, there are no high-rise resorts, and the island is made up of three small towns: Anna Maria at the north end, Holmes Beach in the middle and Bradenton Beach to the south.

A free trolley runs the length of the island continuously, which makes it genuinely easy to get around without a car, and much of the island is walkable or cyclable. The atmosphere is old-Florida: cottages, low-rise, small businesses.

The beaches are wide and white with calm, shallow Gulf water, and the historic Anna Maria City Pier at the northern tip is the island's landmark. Hurricanes Helene and Milton destroyed some 400 to 500 feet of its walkway in 2024, two years after it had been rebuilt, and the pier has been closed since; the city is working toward a reopening in late 2026.

Position relative to the Atlantic sargassum belt

The sargassum that affects Florida is carried north through the Florida Straits in the Florida Current, which becomes the Gulf Stream along the state's Atlantic coast, and in most years only small amounts reach the beaches of the Gulf coast.

The wrack that does appear on these beaches is generally local: seagrass from the bay and the passes, shell fragments and storm debris. It looks superficially similar in a photograph and is a different thing entirely, but it is not sargassum.

The practical point for a traveller choosing between Florida coasts in summer is that these are two separate systems. A week that is poor at Fort Lauderdale or Key West has no bearing on this island.

The sargassum season

On this shore the seasonal variable that most often affects a visit is red tide, a bloom of the alga Karenia brevis that occurs naturally in the Gulf, most often in late summer and autumn. It is unrelated to sargassum, it does not look like weed on the sand, and it is worth checking locally before travelling in those months.

Swimming conditions and safety

The swim here is about as forgiving as Florida offers: fine sand, a gradual shelf, warm shallow water and usually light surf. It suits small children particularly well.

The two passes at either end of the island are the exception and deserve respect: tidal flow through Longboat Pass and Passage Key Inlet is strong, and both carry boat traffic. Manatee County lifeguards cover the county's public beaches on the island, including Manatee Public Beach and Coquina Beach.

In a red-tide year the respiratory irritation is carried onshore by the wind, which is worth checking locally in late summer and autumn.

On sargassum, for completeness: fresh weed in the water is harmless, and the sulphurous smell associated with it comes from material decomposing on hot sand over a day or more. Neither is a common experience on this coast.

Choosing a hotel on this stretch

Accommodation is cottages, small motels and vacation rentals rather than resorts, a direct result of the height restrictions. Prices are moderate and the island books out well ahead in season.

The three towns differ in feel. Anna Maria at the north is the quietest and most village-like, Holmes Beach in the middle has the main public beach and most of the rentals, and Bradenton Beach at the south is livelier with Bridge Street. The free trolley connects all three, so the choice is about atmosphere rather than access.

Visitors weighing this coast against the Atlantic side during the season should note that our Gulf scores run consistently higher, with red tide as the local caveat.

Access and parking coordinates

The island is reached by bridge from Bradenton and from Longboat Key. The free trolley runs its length every 20 minutes, from 6:00 to 22:30 every day, which makes parking once and riding the sensible approach. Sarasota-Bradenton and Tampa international airports both serve the island.
