Reef trip · Key Largo

The catamaran runs out to the reef tract a few kilometres offshore.
The boat is a 75-foot glass-bottom catamaran, the Key Largo Princess, with viewing wells set into the hull so the reef is visible without entering the water. That makes it the one reef trip that works for non-swimmers.
The reef is inside John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and the adjacent national marine sanctuary, the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States. Molasses Reef and the surrounding patch reefs are the usual sites.
What you see depends entirely on clarity. On a calm morning the coral heads, parrotfish, barracuda and rays are plainly visible from the wells; after wind the visibility drops and the trip is less rewarding, which is why morning sailings are the ones to book.
The narration runs throughout, covering the reef structure, the fish and the sanctuary's protection rules. At two and a half hours it suits families, older visitors and anyone who would rather stay dry.
Reviews depend almost entirely on the weather on the day, which is unusually true even for a boat trip.

The Florida Reef is the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States and runs for roughly 560 kilometres from the Dry Tortugas to the St. Lucie Inlet. Since 1990 it has been protected within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, which regulates anchoring, collecting and fishing across the tract.
