Xpu-Ha
Overview
Xpu-Ha is a beach area of several kilometres at Km 265 of Highway 307, between Puerto Aventuras and Akumal, about 25 minutes south of Playa del Carmen and roughly 95 kilometres from Cancún. The sand is fine and pale, and the water is calm and shallow.
There is no town here: what exists is a handful of resorts, small hotels, beach clubs, restaurants and dive shops, reached by numbered access roads from the highway, most of them private. That is a large part of its appeal: there is no centre, no avenue, nothing to do but the beach.

Position relative to the Atlantic sargassum belt
Xpu-Ha faces the open Caribbean, directly across the path of the Yucatán Current that carries sargassum up the Quintana Roo coast. It has none of the protection the north-facing beaches above Cancún enjoy, so it receives whatever is moving up the coast in a given week.
What makes it distinct is the shape. A curved bay reduces wave energy compared with a straight, exposed shoreline, which is exactly why the water here is so calm and so shallow. But the same shape means sargassum that reaches the shallows has little to carry it out again, so it tends to settle along the inner arc rather than washing past.
That is the recurring trade-off on this coast, and it is the same mechanism at work at Playa Bávaro behind its reef and at Puerto Morelos inside its lagoon. Calm water is retained water. A sheltered beach is not automatically a clean one, and Xpu-Ha's smooth turquoise shallows and its tendency to hold sargassum are two consequences of one piece of geography.
The sargassum season
The regional season runs from roughly May to August and peaks in June and July, when the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt reaches its greatest extent. Xpu-Ha is fully exposed to that calendar.

Swimming conditions and safety
This is among the gentlest swimming beaches on the Riviera Maya. The water is shallow a long way out, the bottom is soft sand rather than rock or seagrass, and there is very little surf. It suits young children and weak swimmers better than almost anything between Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
Lifeguard cover, where it exists, is provided by individual hotels and beach clubs, and the stretches between them are unwatched.
On sargassum: fresh weed floating in the water is harmless and merely unpleasant. The sulphurous smell comes from material that has decomposed on hot sand for a day or more, releasing hydrogen sulphide. Because the bay retains rather than flushes, that smell develops here more readily than on an exposed beach with real surf.
Access and getting there
There is no municipal car park. Access to the bay is by signposted roads leading east off Highway 307, and the beach clubs and hotels at the end of those roads operate their own parking areas, generally tied to using their facilities.
By colectivo. Shared vans running Highway 307 between Playa del Carmen and Tulum will set you down at the Xpu-Ha turning on request. The beach is then a walk of several hundred metres east along the access road, which is flat but unshaded.
By ADO bus. The intercity service runs the same corridor and stops at the larger towns rather than at Xpu-Ha itself, so it works best combined with a colectivo or taxi for the final stretch.
By car. This is the easiest approach given the walk from the highway, and it is the normal one. Cancún is roughly an hour north; Playa del Carmen is about 25 minutes.
All Mexican beaches are public by law, including this one, but the practical routes to the sand run through private property, so the beach clubs are the usual way in, although some signed public access points lead onto the same sand for free.
What is nearby
Several cenotes lie close to Xpu-Ha, among them Cenote Azul and Cenote Cristalino just off the highway, and they are a genuine alternative on a day when the sea is heavy. Akumal, ten minutes south, is the best-known place on this coast to snorkel with green turtles. Puerto Aventuras, ten minutes north, has a marina, restaurants and a sheltered cove of its own.
