Playa Sosúa, Puerto Plata
Overview
Playa Sosúa is the town beach of Sosúa, on a crescent-shaped bay on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, about twenty minutes east of Puerto Plata and close to Gregorio Luperón International Airport. The beach is about a kilometre long, with golden sand, a white sandy bottom and rocky points at either end that shelter the bay.
The back of the beach is lined with mature trees, bars, restaurants, souvenir stalls and water-sports operators, and vendors are active on the sand. In 2022 the government and the beach vendors' association announced a reorganisation of the beachfront with new plazas, and visitors have since described works under way. The town itself has an unusual history as a refuge for Jewish settlers who fled Europe in the 1940s.

Position relative to the Atlantic sargassum belt
Sargassum reaches the Dominican Republic mainly on the east coast, which faces the Atlantic belt directly. Sosúa lies on the north coast inside a sheltered bay, so it is generally less exposed than the beaches of Punta Cana, although arrivals do occur in heavy seasons. The dated photographs above show the beach as it actually was.
The sargassum season
On the Dominican coast the heaviest arrivals usually fall between spring and late summer, and the winter months are generally quieter. Volumes and timing vary considerably from one year to the next, so recent photographs are a better guide than the calendar.
Snorkelling and the reef
A reef lies a short distance offshore, and the bay is one of the best-known snorkelling and diving areas of the north coast, with parrotfish, sergeant majors, sea fans and, on some days, turtles. Snorkel equipment is rented on the beach, and boat trips leave from the bay for reef sites nearby.
Swimming conditions and safety
The bay is sheltered from the open Atlantic, and the water is usually calm and clear, which makes it suitable for swimming and for beginners at snorkelling. Boat traffic increases during the day, and the beach is at its busiest around midday, particularly when cruise ships are in port at Puerto Plata, so the morning is usually the quietest time to visit.

The beach is a short walk from the centre of Sosúa, with access from the town streets above the bay. Sosúa is about twenty minutes by road from Puerto Plata and close to the airport.
