Playa San Francisco, Cozumel
Overview
Playa San Francisco is one of the best-known beaches on Cozumel. It lies on the island's west coast, about 14 kilometres south of San Miguel along the Carretera Costera Sur, between the Carlos'n Charlie's and Paradise Beach clubs. The sand is white, the water is usually calm and clear, and the shoreline is sandy rather than the rocky limestone shelf that lines much of this coast, which makes it one of the easier places on the island simply to walk into the sea.
The beach is organised around its beach clubs, which offer loungers, umbrellas, food and drink, and water sports such as parasailing, jet skis and banana rides. Several of the clubs, including San Francisco Beach Club and the neighbouring Chula's Beach Club, also anchor inflatable water parks in the shallow water off the beach, with floating slides, climbing structures and mats, usually included in or added to a day pass. It is a regular stop for cruise passengers and for day trips from the mainland, so it is lively rather than quiet, especially on days when several ships are in port.

Playa San Francisco lies on the sheltered side of the island, so its photographs are a useful comparison with the mainland beaches of Playa del Carmen and Tulum on the same day.
Position relative to the Atlantic sargassum belt
Sargassum reaching the Mexican Caribbean crosses the tropical Atlantic, enters the Caribbean and is carried north along Quintana Roo by the Yucatán Current. Cozumel lies in that flow about 20 kilometres off the mainland, and its two coasts receive it very differently. The east coast faces the open Caribbean and takes the arrivals directly, while the west coast faces the channel towards Playa del Carmen and is sheltered by the island itself.
The state sargassum monitoring network regularly rates the west coast beaches, from San Juan and Chankanaab south to San Francisco, Palancar and El Cielo, at a low level, while beaches on the east coast such as Chen Río, Playa Bonita and Punta Molas are rated far higher in the same reports.
The shelter is not absolute. Local reports note that the prevailing winds blow from the east and south-east between April and October, which favours the west coast, but that northerly winds in winter can reverse the pattern and push material onto the western beaches for a time.
The sargassum season
The regional season runs from roughly May to August, with the heaviest arrivals usually in June and July, and the coast is generally quieter from late autumn into spring. The wider picture for this coast is set out in our Riviera Maya sargassum season guide.
Swimming conditions and safety
The water is generally calm, protected from the open-sea swell by the island, with a sandy entry at the water's edge. Snorkelling is possible from the shore, and the reefs of the Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park lie offshore along this coast.
Boat traffic from the beach clubs, including jet skis and parasailing boats, operates off the beach, so swimmers should stay in the areas the clubs mark for swimming. Sun and heat are the other realistic hazards on a full day here.
Choosing where to stay
Most visitors come to Playa San Francisco for the day, from a hotel in San Miguel, from another part of the west coast or from a cruise ship. Cozumel's hotels are concentrated along the west coast, in the zones north and south of San Miguel. Because the whole west coast is sheltered, a hotel there gives easy access to this beach and to the others along the Costera Sur.
Access and getting there
Cozumel is reached by passenger ferry from Playa del Carmen to San Miguel, the island's only town, or by air to Cozumel International Airport. Cruise ships dock at the island's own piers. From San Miguel the Carretera Costera Sur runs south along the west coast, and Playa San Francisco is at Kilometre 14.5. Taxis serve the whole route, and cars and scooters can be rented in town.
Entry to the beach clubs is by day pass or by spending at the bar and restaurant, and the terms vary from club to club, so they are best confirmed directly. We do not publish a car park for this beach.
