Dania Beach

Overview

Dania Beach sits in Broward County between Hollywood to the south and Fort Lauderdale to the north, and it is the quietest of the three. The town is small, the beachfront is low-rise, and the sand is backed by a fishing pier and a state park rather than a promenade or a hotel strip.

North of the municipal beach lies Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park, formerly John U. Lloyd, which occupies a long stretch of protected shoreline running up to the Port Everglades inlet. That park is the reason this coast still has undeveloped beach and mangrove within sight of a major city.

The municipal section, Dania Beach Ocean Park, is compact, just over a quarter of a mile: a paved lot immediately behind the sand, the fishing pier, which is open from 6:00 to midnight and charges a small fee to walk out, a marina and a handful of places to eat. It draws local families and fishermen rather than visitors, and it is noticeably less busy than its neighbours even at weekends.

Position relative to the Atlantic sargassum belt

Florida sits at the outer edge of the sargassum system rather than within it. The Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt forms between West Africa and Brazil and travels west into the Caribbean; this coast receives only the fraction that survives that passage and is then carried north by the Florida Current, the flow that becomes the Gulf Stream.

Swimming conditions and safety

This is an open Atlantic beach with a gentle shelf and generally moderate surf, comparable to Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale. Rip currents are the principal hazard rather than wave height, and they form most readily on windy days and near structures, which here means the pier and the inlet jetties.

Lifeguard cover differs between the two sections, and the distinction matters. Dania Beach Ocean Rescue guards the municipal beach year-round, from 9:00 to 17:00, while the state park states plainly that no lifeguards are on duty there and that visitors swim at their own risk; warning flag signs are posted at the welcome stations and along the beaches instead. Read those flags rather than assuming supervision. Purple indicates marine pests rather than sargassum, usually jellyfish or Portuguese man o' war, which arrive on the same onshore winds that carry the weed.

Give the inlet a wide berth. Port Everglades is a working commercial and cruise port, and the currents in and around the channel are strong and unpredictable.

On sargassum: fresh weed floating in the water is harmless and merely unpleasant. The sulphurous smell comes from material that has decomposed on hot sand for a day or more, releasing hydrogen sulphide. If one stretch smells strongly, walking north or into the state park is usually more effective than waiting.

Access and parking coordinates

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport lies immediately inland of Dania Beach,. A1A connects north to Fort Lauderdale and south to Hollywood.

The state park

Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park is the reason to choose Dania over its neighbours. It covers 310 acres between the Atlantic and the Intracoastal Waterway, running from the Port Everglades Inlet in the north to Dania in the south, and it has been in state hands since 1973.

Its name carries the more important history. Until 2016 this was John U. Lloyd Beach State Park; it was renamed for Dr. Von Mizell and Eula Johnson, the civil rights leaders who pressed Broward County for years to provide a beach for African Americans and then led the 1961 wade-ins at Fort Lauderdale that forced the desegregation of the county's beaches the following year. This stretch of sand was once the county's designated segregated beach.

Inside the park, Whiskey Creek is a mangrove-lined inlet that serves as a manatee sanctuary and is popular for canoeing, kayaking and paddleboarding, with craft available from the Whiskey Creek Hideout concession alongside chair and umbrella rentals. There is a barrier-island nature trail through coastal hammock, a park drive of about two and a half miles used by cyclists, and the park is a listed site on the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. Offshore, the Dania Beach Erojacks are an artificial reef well known to divers.

It also gives you options on a poor day. If the municipal beach by the pier is weeded, the park's sand runs for well over a mile south, and conditions along it are not uniform.

What is nearby

The Dania Beach Fishing Pier is the local landmark, with the Quarterdeck restaurant overlooking the water beside it. The sand closest to the pier is reliably the busiest part of this coast; the state park beaches to the south stay sparsely populated by comparison. Hollywood's Broadwalk is a short drive south and Fort Lauderdale's beachfront a similar distance north, so this is a convenient base for judging several beaches in a morning.
