Cocoa Beach

Overview

Cocoa Beach occupies a barrier island in Brevard County, immediately south of Cape Canaveral and about an hour east of Orlando. It is Florida's best-known surf town, with wide, gently sloping Atlantic sand and small, consistent waves that suit learners better than almost anywhere else on the coast.

The Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier, built in 1962 at 401 Meade Avenue and running 800 feet over the Atlantic, with restaurants and bars on it, is the landmark most visitors navigate by, and the Ron Jon Surf Shop on A1A is the other. Behind the beach the town is low-rise and residential, with none of the tower wall that defines the south-east Florida coast.

The other defining feature is the Kennedy Space Center immediately north. Launches are visible from the sand, and the town's identity is bound up with the space programme as much as with surfing.

Position relative to the Atlantic sargassum belt

Sargassum reaching Florida's Atlantic coast is carried north by the Florida Current, which becomes the Gulf Stream, and arrives in scattered patches, so whether it lands depends on the wind on the day: an easterly pushes it ashore, a westerly holds it offshore.

The sargassum season

Within the season the wind matters more than the calendar, so the dated record is worth checking close to a visit.

Swimming conditions and safety

This is an open Atlantic beach with a genuine surf zone, so waves and rip currents are the real hazards. Lifeguards are on duty year-round at the pier and seasonally at the oceanfront parks, among them Alan Shepard, Sidney Fischer and Lori Wilson parks; the same small, regular waves that make this a good learning beach also generate rips, particularly around the pier.

Two local points are worth knowing. Currents run harder around the pier pilings than on the open sand either side. And from roughly March to October this is an active sea-turtle nesting shore, with marked nests, lighting restrictions after dark and a legal obligation to leave nests and hatchlings undisturbed.

On sargassum: fresh weed in the water is harmless, if unpleasant. The smell associated with it comes from material decomposing on hot sand over a day or more and releasing hydrogen sulphide, so a strong odour indicates old weed rather than a new arrival.

Choosing a hotel on this stretch

Cocoa Beach has a spread of mid-range oceanfront hotels and rentals along A1A, and the town is small enough that most of them are within reach of the pier and the restaurants. It is markedly cheaper than the south-east coast and considerably less built up.

The choice is mainly between staying near the pier, which is the busiest and most convenient section, and further south toward Patrick Space Force Base, which is quieter. Cape Canaveral immediately north is closer to the port and the cruise terminals.

Visitors weighing this coast against South Florida during the season should note that the two behave differently for the geographic reason above, and that Cocoa Beach also puts Orlando within an hour, which no south-east Florida beach does.

Access and parking coordinates

Without a car, Space Coast Area Transit serves the barrier island and the mainland towns, though service is limited compared with South Florida. Orlando International and Melbourne Orlando International airports both serve the area.
