Overview

Bahia Honda State Park occupies its own key in the Lower Keys, off the Overseas Highway at mile marker 37. It is regularly ranked among the best beaches in the United States, and the reason is straightforward: it has real natural sand, which almost nowhere else in the Keys does.

The park has beaches on both sides of the island. Sandspur on the Atlantic side is the longest and the one the rankings usually mean; Calusa on the Gulf side is smaller and shallower. The old Bahia Honda Rail Bridge, part of Flagler's Overseas Railroad, stands alongside and is the park's landmark.

It is a state park rather than a resort beach, with a ranger station, an entry fee, set daytime hours, camping and a concession. That structure matters, because it means the beach is managed rather than groomed to a hotel's schedule.

Position relative to the Atlantic sargassum belt

Being the best beach in the Keys does not exempt it from the Keys' problem, and this page exists partly to make that clear.

The Keys sit directly in the path sargassum takes out of the Caribbean. Weed carried west across the tropical Atlantic enters the Caribbean, tracks past the Yucatán, and turns north through the Florida Straits in the Florida Current, which runs immediately south of the island chain. Bahia Honda is in the Lower Keys, close to the strongest part of that flow.

Three local features then make accumulation worse here than the same volume would cause on an open mainland beach. The water is shallow for a long way out, so rafts ground close inshore. There is almost no wave energy to break weed up or take it back out. And the seagrass beds offshore hold floating material rather than letting it pass.

The park's two sides behave differently, which is the useful part. Sandspur faces the Atlantic and takes arrivals directly; Calusa on the Gulf side is more sheltered. On a poor day the two can be genuinely different beaches, and a visitor who finds one unusable should walk across to the other before giving up.

The sargassum season

In the Keys the season runs from roughly late spring into late summer, with the heaviest arrivals usually between May and August and little through the winter. Because arrivals here accumulate rather than clear, the practical difference between a good and a bad visit is measured in days, and this is a park worth checking the day before rather than the month before.

Swimming conditions and safety

The swim is shallow and calm on both sides, with sand rather than the rock and grass that dominate most Keys shorelines. That is the whole appeal, and it makes this one of the few Keys beaches genuinely suited to a day in the water.

Currents run strongly in the channel under the old bridge, and that area is not for casual swimming. There is no continuous lifeguard cover, and the park's hours mean the beach is closed at night.

On sargassum: fresh weed in the water is harmless. The strong sulphurous smell this shoreline can develop comes from thick material decomposing on hot sand over several days and releasing hydrogen sulphide. Where mats have been sitting, walk around them rather than through them, since small stinging organisms live in the weed.

Choosing a hotel on this stretch

The park has campsites and cabins, which book out far in advance and are the only way to stay on the key itself. Otherwise the nearest accommodation is on Big Pine Key and in Marathon, both a short drive along the Overseas Highway.

Most visitors treat Bahia Honda as a stop between Key West and the mainland rather than a base, which it suits well: it is roughly 45 minutes from Key West and an hour and a half from Key Largo.

For anyone whose priority is a beach rather than a reef, this is the beach in the Keys, with the seasonal caveat above. Key Largo and Islamorada are the diving and fishing bases and have very little sand.

Access and parking coordinates

The park is reached only by the Overseas Highway; there is no rail service and public transport in the Keys is minimal, so a car is effectively necessary. Key West International Airport is around 45 minutes away and Miami International around two and a half hours.
